Jessy Price Cleaning Animal Hides

Bringing Your Animal Hide Back to Life: The Rug Cleaning of Tulsa Process

Animal hide rugs are more than just a decorative piece—they’re a touch of nature in your home. Over time, they can lose their luster due to dirt, stains, or simply age. At Rug Cleaning of Tulsa, we take a personalized approach to cleaning animal hides, ensuring that each piece is treated with care and expertise.

Imagine your beautiful hide rug, soft to the touch and vibrant in appearance, restored to its original glory. That’s exactly what we strive for with every cleaning process. In the example photos shown alongside this post, you’ll see my wife Jessy Price carefully cleaning an animal hide.

Let’s break down how we do it:

Understanding the Condition

Before we dive into cleaning, we start with a thorough inspection. Every hide tells a story, and we want to understand it fully. We check for issues like dryness, stiffness, or matting of the fur. A detailed pre-test helps us identify the unique challenges, such as yellowing (a common issue in older hides), or if the fur has become rotten and prone to falling out. We always document and photograph the “before” condition, so you can see the difference once we’ve completed our process.

Gentle, Safe Cleaning Process

Animal hides require extra care, so our cleaning process avoids harsh treatments. We don’t use solvents or heat, both of which can damage the hide and fur. Instead, we air-dust the hide, then apply a specially formulated leather conditioner to the skin side. In the example photos, you’ll see Jessy gently brushing this conditioner into the hide, nourishing it as part of our careful, hands-on process. We use a specialty cleaning product to wash both sides of the rug. It’s self rinsing and leaves behind no residue

Afterward, we rinse both sides of the hide with clean water to flush out dirt. No abrasive tools, just gentle hands and thorough rinsing to remove grime without damaging the hide. During drying, we use a weighted roller to soften the skin and prevent cracking.

The Final Touches

Once dried, we groom the fur with a specialized tool to bring back its natural texture and shine. If the hide shows signs of yellowing, we may use a light spray of our diluted odor and stain remover, followed by UV light exposure to restore its color.
After cleaning, Jessy carefully combs through the fur, ensuring that every part of the hide looks and feels its best.
